This is quite an informative post. We can actually take full advantage of social networking sites. I do most of my businesses online and you can actually generate easy cash online--you just have to know the ways. You can target social networking sites, build a massive list of buyers. Invest time learning how to make money online and it will be a time well spent.

Thanks for an excellent post. I have been following this space for some time and I think that virtual currency has the greatest potential of the four (i consider virtual gifting almost a subset of virtual currency because it's like giving a gift card). If virtual currencies were to circulate out of the "in-world" or "in-game" social network, the viral aspects would be incredible! We would probably see new businesses revolving around currency management. I will be publishing a slideshare soon on "Currency Design for Social Networks". In the meantime, I edit an economics blog on "The Monetary Future" and below I have tagged the posts with the "virtual currency" label:

Perfect timing. we are currently writing (or perhaps rewriting) our monetization plan in conjunction with v2 of our site.

While the post covers mostly existing networks (facebook etc) and the apps built for them - I wonder what your take would be for new sites that are looking to monetize with avenues other than ads.

I for one think that if you create leverage between users and organizations you can have a powerful means to monetize. Example - users rate products - company A's products get poor ratings. Company A pays network for the data to show why thier products are poorly rated. This can apply to almost anything - not just products.

Thanks for the great post.

Thanks for the complete article!
By the way, you build cool websites.

We wrote a 150slide paper on monetization of Social Networks here:
It is focused on Germany but only in some parts. Most of the strategies, business models and scenarios have a worldwide focus.

Thanks very good article.
Would be interesting to make the same study for the rest of the social network market, such as facebook page owners that want to monetize, vertical social networks (outside facebook), etc..

some more business models possible:

- making brand pages and apps for brands ( appsavvy model)
- seeding and monitoring service ( people) doing campaigns
- Analytics service - over all social networks of a brand ( fb, youtube, twitter, ..) see Nielsen-Facebook deal.
- coupons - time limited pizza offers.. becoming more important
- Premium productivity apps - fi involver.com

rgds
