Purpose Driven Blogging

by VentureDig on November 2, 2008

Life is too short to waste on unimportant activities.

Not only does this apply to blogging, it applies to work, hobbies and how you spend your time–virtually every sector in your life.

Every Sunday, I sit down, open up my Google calendar, write out my recurring activities and ask, “What is the purpose of this?”

If I can’t uncover a purpose that is clearly meaningful, practical and real, I extinguish that activity.

Simple.

I once had a blog where hours were wasted posting, researching and sharing–to then discover that the blog had no purpose. It’s one of those things where you wake up, look left and right, and say, “What’s the purpose of this blog”…and you draw a blank.

If you’ve ever had that experience, if you’ve ever had to force yourself to blog, you really need to readdress the most vital aspect of your blog–its purpose.

Your purpose is different than your mission statement.

Here’s the mission statement for my micro-blog, VentureDig: “To share ventures and cultivate an active VC/Entrepreneur-driven community.”

Here’s the purpose for Venturedig: “To create something that enriches the lives of others.”

Already VentureDig has connected entrepreneurs in Hong Kong to VC’s in the U.S. This type of connection is what really drives me to put hours into working on VentureDig. This purpose eliminates the feeling of obligation, and instead it envokes a feeling of committed passion to develop the site.

This Sunday, try asking yourself this question, “What is the purpose of my blog?”
